Tripura HC Disposes Writ After Gramin Bank Cancels Transfer Order That Triggered the Petition

The High Court of Tripura disposed of a writ petition filed by a bank employee after Tripura Gramin Bank cancelled the transfer order that had prompted the challenge.

Justice Biswajit Palit, sitting singly at the High Court of Tripura, Agartala, disposed of WP(C) No.266 of 2026 on 22 May 2026 after counsel for Tripura Gramin Bank informed the court that the transfer order challenged in the petition had been cancelled by the bank's own authority on 20 April 2026. With the impugned order no longer in existence, the court found that nothing survived for adjudication and closed the proceedings.

The Dispute Before the High Court

Bijit Kumar Deb, a 43-year-old resident of Ward No.4, Manik Bhander, Kamalpur, District Dhalai, Tripura, had filed the writ petition against Tripura Gramin Bank and its Chairman, Chief Manager (HR), and General Manager (HR). The petition challenged a transfer order issued by the bank's authority. The respondents are a government undertaking with their head office at Abhoynagar, Agartala.

Senior Advocate Mr. Purusuttam Roy Barman, assisted by Advocate Mr. Dipjyoti Paul, appeared for the petitioner. Advocate Mr. Prabir Saha appeared on behalf of all the respondents.

Bank's Cancellation Renders Petition Infructuous

When the matter came up before Justice Palit, Mr. Saha submitted that the transfer order issued by the authority of Tripura Gramin Bank had been cancelled by an order dated 20 April 2026. A copy of that cancellation order was produced before the court and directed to be kept on record.

After hearing both sides, the court recorded that nothing survives for further adjudication in the writ petition. No substantive examination of the transfer order's legality was undertaken, as the cancellation had already removed the subject matter of the challenge.

Outcome

The writ petition stands disposed of. The cancellation order dated 20 April 2026 is placed on the court record.
