President Appoints Four Judges to Supreme Court of India With Effect From 1 June 2026

The President of India, exercising power under Article 124(2), appointed four judges to the Supreme Court on 1 June 2026, including one direct advocate elevation.

The Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice, issued four separate Gazette notifications on 1 June 2026, each under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, appointing new Judges to the Supreme Court of India. Three of the four appointees are sitting Chief Justices of High Courts. The fourth, Smt. Venkita Subramani Mohana, is elevated directly as an Advocate. All four appointments take effect from the date each appointee assumes charge of their respective office.

The Four Appointees

The notifications, bearing reference number K-13011/01/2026-US.I and signed by Joint Secretary Jagannath Srinivasan, cover the following appointments:

Smt. Venkita Subramani Mohana — appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The notification addresses her through the Secretary General, Supreme Court of India, New Delhi, indicating she is elevated directly from the Bar as an Advocate.

Shri Justice Arun Palli — Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Copies of his notification were directed to the Registrar General of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the Principal Secretary to the Lt. Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, the Secretary to the Lt. Governor of Ladakh, and the Chief Secretary of the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, among others.

Shri Justice Shree Chandrashekhar — Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay, appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. His notification was copied to the Registrar General of the Bombay High Court, the Secretaries to the Governors of Maharashtra and Goa, and the Chief Secretaries of both states.

Shri Justice Sheel Nagu — Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. His notification was addressed through the Registrar General of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana at Chandigarh, with copies to the Secretaries to the Governors of Punjab and Haryana and the Chief Secretaries of both states.

Constitutional Basis and Notification Process

Each notification invokes clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, which governs the appointment of Judges of the Supreme Court by the President. The notifications were issued from Jaisalmer House, 26, Man Singh Road, New Delhi, the seat of the Department of Justice (Appointments Division).

All four notifications carry the same file reference — No. K-13011/01/2026-US.I — and are dated 1 June 2026. The distribution lists in each notification include the President's Secretariat, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister's Office, the Registrar (Confidential) in the Office of the Chief Justice of India, and the Technical Director, NIC, Department of Justice, for upload to the Department's notification website at www.doj.gov.in.

The notifications were signed at the Joint Secretary level by Jagannath Srinivasan, with the copy distribution signed by Under Secretary Anant Kumar.

Outcome

Four judges stand appointed to the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date each assumes charge: Smt. Venkita Subramani Mohana (elevated from the Bar), Shri Justice Arun Palli (formerly Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh), Shri Justice Shree Chandrashekhar (formerly Chief Justice, High Court of Bombay), and Shri Justice Sheel Nagu (formerly Chief Justice, High Court of Punjab and Haryana). All appointments are made under Article 124(2) of the Constitution of India vide Gazette notifications dated 1 June 2026.
